Glutathione serum vs cream vs soap: which works best?

How glutathione serums, creams, soaps and face washes differ, and which format makes sense for your skin.

Key takeaways
  • Soaps and face washes mainly clean; they are rinsed off too fast to change tone.
  • Serums and creams are leave-on, like the products used in research.
  • One leave-on product plus daily sunscreen beats stacking several.

Which is better, glutathione serum or cream?

Both are leave-on, which is what the research used. Serums are lighter and suit oily skin under a moisturiser; creams also moisturise and suit normal to dry skin. The formula, regular use and daily sunscreen matter more than the format.

Does glutathione soap work?

Soaps and face washes are rinsed off within a minute, so they mainly clean. They are a fine first step, but visible change needs a leave-on product and sunscreen.

What the research used

The best-known study used a leave-on 2% glutathione lotion twice daily for 10 weeks (Watanabe et al., 2014). A 2025 review found studies of leave-on glutathione promising but small (Khanna et al., J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2025). There is little evidence for soaps.

A simple routine

  1. Night: cleanse with a gentle face wash such as Gluta Boost Face Wash.
  2. Apply one leave-on glutathione product (a cream like GlutaNex Glutathione Night Cream, or a serum).
  3. Morning: sunscreen SPF 30 or higher.

Using several glutathione products at once does not speed results and adds irritation risk.
