Glutathione for pigmentation: types, what helps and what to avoid
The five common kinds of pigmentation on Indian skin, which ones a glutathione cream may help, and when to see a dermatologist.
- Tan and acne marks respond best to a glutathione cream used with daily sunscreen.
- Melasma and changing spots need a dermatologist.
- Give it 8–12 weeks; avoid steroid "fairness" creams.
Does glutathione reduce pigmentation?
It may help some types look lighter over 8 to 12 weeks, mainly tan and acne marks, when used with daily sunscreen. It works modestly and gradually, and it is not proven for melasma.
Which glutathione product is best for pigmentation?
A leave-on cream or serum, used at night, with SPF 30+ sunscreen every morning. Leave-on products are what the research tested; soaps and face washes rinse off too quickly.
The common types of pigmentation
| Type | What it looks like | Can a glutathione cream help? | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun tan | Even darkening of exposed skin | Yes, gradually, with sunscreen | Summer tan |
| Acne marks (PIH) | Flat brown marks where pimples healed | Can help them fade faster | Acne marks |
| Sun spots | Small, round, flat brown spots | A little; slow | Dark spots and tan |
| Melasma | Patches on both cheeks, forehead or upper lip | Not reliably; see a dermatologist | Melasma |
| Freckles | Tiny spots, often since childhood | Little; sunscreen stops them darkening |
A routine that helps most pigmentation
- Night: gentle face wash such as Gluta Boost Face Wash, then a leave-on glutathione cream such as GlutaNex Glutathione Night Cream.
- Morning: broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, reapplied outdoors.
- Hands off: do not pick pimples or scrub hard; irritation makes new marks.
- Wait: 8 to 12 weeks before judging. See how long glutathione takes to work.
What the research shows
In the best-known study, a 2% glutathione lotion lowered the melanin index more than placebo over 10 weeks (Watanabe et al., 2014). A 2025 review called topical glutathione promising but noted that studies are few and small (Khanna et al., J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2025).
What to avoid
- Steroid or unlabelled "fairness" creams that promise results in days (Sonthalia, Daulatabad & Sarkar, IJDVL 2016).
- Lemon, baking soda or toothpaste on the face.
- Starting several strong actives at once.
When to see a dermatologist
Patches on both cheeks, a spot that changes size, shape or colour, bleeding, or no change after 3 months of care.
