Is glutathione safe in pregnancy?

What is known about glutathione, retinol and skincare during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Short answer: the safety of glutathione during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well studied, so speak to your doctor before using any glutathione product. Avoid glutathione injections and avoid creams containing retinol.

Creams

Little glutathione is absorbed from a cream, but many glutathione creams also contain other actives. Retinol (vitamin A) is generally avoided in pregnancy. The GlutaNex Night Cream contains retinol and salicylic acid, so do not use it while pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor says it is fine.

Tablets and injections

There are no good safety studies of glutathione supplements in pregnancy. Injections carry extra risks and warnings (US FDA warning, 2015); avoid them.

Pregnancy-friendly basics

  • A gentle cleanser and a simple moisturiser.
  • Sunscreen every day; pregnancy can make skin more prone to dark patches (melasma).
  • Ask your doctor or dermatologist before adding any active ingredient.
