Glutathione cream after waxing or threading: how long to wait

Can you apply glutathione cream after face waxing, threading or bleach? How long to wait, what to use instead on the first night, and how to plan parlour visits around a retinol night cream.

Can I apply glutathione cream after threading?

Not on the same night. Threading pulls hair from the root and leaves the skin red and tender for a while. Wait 24 to 48 hours, until there is no redness, bumps or stinging, and use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser in between.

Can I use glutathione cream after face waxing?

Wait at least 24 to 48 hours, and longer if the skin is still red or peeling. Wax also lifts some surface skin, so an active cream with retinol or salicylic acid can sting badly on freshly waxed skin. Go back to it only when the skin feels completely normal.

Should I stop retinol before waxing?

Many parlours ask you to pause retinol products for several days to a week before facial waxing, because retinol can make skin more fragile and more likely to lift with the wax. If your night cream contains retinol, tell the parlour and consider threading instead of waxing on the face.

Do not apply glutathione cream straight after waxing or threading. Wait 24 to 48 hours, until the skin has no redness, bumps or stinging, and use only a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser in that time; with a cream that contains retinol or salicylic acid, waiting matters even more.

Eyebrow and upper-lip threading every two or three weeks, face waxing before a function, and a bleach or clean-up at the parlour are routine for many Indian women. Here is how to fit a glutathione night cream around them without stinging, peeling or dark marks.

Why freshly waxed or threaded skin reacts

  • Hair is pulled from the root. The open follicles look like small red bumps for a few hours and can get irritated by actives, fragrance or dirt.
  • Wax lifts surface skin. Along with hair, wax takes off some dead skin cells, so the skin barrier is thinner for a day or two.
  • Heat and friction. Hot wax, rubbing and powder all add to the redness.
  • Irritation can leave marks. On Indian skin, repeated irritation and bumps can leave brown marks that take weeks to look lighter. Being gentle now saves you that trouble later.

A special note on GlutaNex Night Cream

GlutaNex Glutathione Night Cream contains glutathione, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, retinol, ceramides, salicylic acid, peptides, aloe vera, turmeric and neem. Because of the retinol and salicylic acid:

  • It is for night use only, and should not go on broken or freshly waxed skin.
  • Start it 2 to 3 nights a week, and plan those nights around your parlour visits.
  • If you regularly wax your face, tell the parlour you use a retinol night cream. Many parlours ask you to pause retinol for several days to a week before facial waxing. Threading is usually gentler on retinol-using skin than waxing.
  • Use sunscreen every morning, especially in the days after waxing or threading.

A parlour-week routine

  1. 3 to 7 days before facial waxing: pause the Night Cream if the parlour asks you to, or if your skin has felt dry from retinol.
  2. The day of threading or waxing: go with clean skin, no actives. Afterwards, rinse with cool water, pat dry and apply a plain moisturiser. Skip makeup, scrubs and face packs for the day.
  3. The next 24 to 48 hours: gentle face wash such as Gluta Boost Face Wash, plain moisturiser, sunscreen in the morning. No lemon, no alum, no toner with alcohol.
  4. Once the skin is fully calm: go back to the Night Cream at your usual 2 to 3 nights a week, using a pea-sized amount.

The general steps for applying the cream are in how to use glutathione cream, and glutathione cream and moisturizer explains how to layer a plain moisturiser on other nights.

Upper lip and chin: extra care

The upper lip is often threaded or waxed and is also an area where people notice darker-looking patches. Repeated irritation there can make the area look darker over time, so:

  • Keep the cream off the lips themselves and the area right at the lip line.
  • Do not apply the Night Cream on the upper lip the night it is threaded.
  • Use sunscreen on the upper lip every morning.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying an active night cream the same night "because the pores are open".
  • Rubbing lemon, ice straight on skin, or alum over freshly threaded areas.
  • Waxing over sunburn, active pimples or skin already peeling from retinol.
  • Bleaching and waxing on the same day.
  • Pushing through stinging. If a cream burns, wash it off; see glutathione cream burning and glutathione cream for sensitive skin.

What to expect, honestly

Waiting a day or two does not slow down your results in any way you will notice. A glutathione cream used steadily with daily sunscreen may help tan and dark marks look lighter slowly over 8 to 12 weeks; skipping two nights around a parlour visit is fine. What does set you back is irritated skin that leaves new marks.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist if you get burns, blisters or raw patches after waxing or bleach, bumps that fill with pus, ingrown hairs that keep coming back, or redness that has not settled in a few days. Patch test any new cream on the jaw or inner arm for 24 to 48 hours first, on skin you have not just waxed or threaded.
